  My 79 year old father lives alone in Gaffney, SC and was admitted to Mary Black Health System with a severe tonsillar abscess. He has a fragile medical history, largely involving coronary artery disease and a heart attack one year ago. After a 10-day hospital stay that also included a severe episode of heart failure, he was discharged and I brought my father to my home in Atlanta to be cared for as I am also a nurse. I was told to follow up with Shirley Britto, his Nurse Practitioner. The second day home, my father developed severe anxiety and shortness of breath. Without a physician in Atlanta, I called Shirley Britto's office to get an order for the same anxiety medicine he as taking in the hospital. I made 3 additional calls that day and the next, leaving voice mails with Britto's nurse and never received a call back. The anxiety and my father's care got so bad that I took him to an urgent care center, where his anxiety was treated, along with other issues. He has slowly responded. It is now 1 week later and I finally received a call back today from Shirley Britto's office, stating that she could not do anything for him since he had left Gaffney. When I asked why it took so long to receive a call back, I was told that Shirley Britto only works certain days in that office. In my opinion, it is malpractice to not promptly care for a patient on your service, especially when that patient had just been in the hospital with a severe illness. We will not be going back to that office.
